The purpose of this online portfolio is to document my progress on audio projects that I am currently working on, to showcase completed projects (both uni projects and my own work), and to reflect on what I have learnt during my time studying at SAE Institute. I will also be using this blog as a place for me to express my opinions on different subjects regarding audio, sound engineering and music, and post some reviews on new software and plugins.

First of all; a little bit about myself. I've recently commenced my third trimester at SAE Institute in Perth, where I am studying a Bachelor of Audio degree. I've had a strong interest in engineering and producing music for a few years now, due to picking up guitar in high school and playing in bands since around 2010. Upon completion of my degree, I'm hoping to jump right into freelance studio work; approaching younger bands and artists and producing their tracks in my small bedroom studio, working my way up in the industry and (hopefully) one day operating a professional recording studio, working with more reknowned artists and developing my abilities and my production style.

My musical interests could be described as alternative; I'm really into punk-rock and hardcore bands and my goal is to work for bands in that style. Some producers that I really look up to are Kurt Ballou (who has engineered albums for Converge, American Nightmare and Four Year Strong), Will Yip (Citizen, Circa Survive, Turnover) and Rick Rubin (Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Slayer).

Although I have little to no experience on the subject, I have also recently developed a strong interest in post-production work such as film scores and sound effects, so I would also be quite happy working in that area.

I have worked on a couple of releases for local Perth bands, such as Palm Soma's "Double A-Side", on which I worked with two other students to record and mix at the SAE studios. This was a major project for the studio production unit in trimester two. Palm Soma have since released this as their first demo and are planning to spend more time with us in the studios to produce an EP this year.

I've recently spent a few days working for Alchemist Studios in Swan Valley, where I helped to acoustically treat the recording room, and recorded drums for thrash-metal band Remission. We recorded four live drum tracks for their upcoming EP which they plan to release soon. We were limited to the amount of micrrophones used on these recordings due to Alchemist Studios being a newer, smaller studio, but managed to capture a really nice sound on the overhead mics and fatten the kick and snare drums by using triggers and sample replacement. I will post a link when the EP is released.

I currently produce music for myself and my band at home, where I program drum tracks using software such as Steven Slate Drums, and record guitars and bass through a Line6 POD guitar amp modeller. I'm planning to get my band into the studio this trimester to record live drums and guitars for a couple of songs that we will release later in the year.
